Journey to Green
Our Journey to green began as we looked for yet another way to separate ourselves from our competition. My partner Chadd and I have always been interested in building a better product. From the start of our business our motto was ‘building a higher standard’. Our standard has always been higher than our competition.
As we looked at the housing market around the country we saw a lot of green building going on in other areas of the country but none in our area. As we started looking more at green building we started to realize that many of the things that were required we were already doing. Of course there are things we had to change to be able to call ourselves green builders. All of our homes are now third party tested to ensure that our duct work and building envelopes are air tight. We also now recycle much of our jobsite waste including cardboard and drywall.
All of our homes are now currently Energy Star certified (www.EnergyStar.gov). We are also building to the NAHB’s (National Association of Home Builders) Green Building Guidelines (http://www.NAHB.org). The NAHB currently had 3 levels of green bronze, silver and gold. We are building to the gold standard.
We also have Chester County’s first LEED house currently under construction(www.USGBC.org). LEED is the United States Green Building Councils green building program. LEED is probably the most recognized and stringent of all the green building programs.
Many people think that green means expensive; it doesn’t have to be. It all depends on what your baseline is. We were already building an energy efficient house so we had to change very little. Therefore the additional cost were negligible.
