Green Homes Have Come to Chester County

Green Home Living has come to Chester County

You can hardly open the newspaper today or listen to a report on the television without hearing about a new "green" product or idea. From biofuel to reusable grocery bags, and now biodegradeable trash bags, every day new options for chosing environmentally friendly products becomes more the norm. Finally, in Chester County we have options for buying Green Homes.

Matt Fetick, Ryan Myers and Michele Orlando of Keller Williams Real Estate, all became certified Ecobrokers (http://www.ecobrokers.com/) in 2007. Sensing a need to pursue healthier living options, this team of realtors took over 40 hours of continuing education to learn more about green housing and the environmental issues that effect the homes that we live in. Originally the concept of green homes was thought to be only for the extreme environmentalists. However, the team found that green home building addresses a broad range of concerns such as, radon, asbestos, water quality, air quality, and waste water management, not to mention energy efficiency and improved health.

As marketing agents for green home builders, Jeff Berlin (http://www.berlinconstruction.com) and TMG Homes (http://www.tmggreenhomes.com), they have introduced new construction options in our community that promote healthier living, environmentally friendly and financially responsible homes.

At Fairway Estates, (http://www.fairwaygreenhomes.com/) a new home community, by Jeff Berlin they are committed to building homes that greatly exceed the National Association of Home Builders green home guidelines.  Located on the 1st-3rd fairways at Hartefeld National Golf Course Jeff focused on the details from recycling construction debris, to improving and saving the water quality by reducing water usage and creating less ground water pollution.

Berlin also stuck to the traditional floor plans and models that have become so popular in our community. "I wanted to make sure that going green didn’t mean going ugly", said Berlin. "All of our homes maintain the same features that buyers want, while giving them added benefits such as energy efficiency, resource friendly and financially responsible homes. Berlin offers green homes at multiple locations including town homes in Kennett Square starting at $299,000 to custom homes in Unionville-Chadds Ford School District starting in the high $600,000s.

Chadd Martin and Torrey Marks of TMG Homes have built the first LEED certified home in Chester County.  The highest standard in green building techniques,  the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating SystemTM encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.

"To our knowledge, we are the first LEED home and we are proud of what our company is doing to promote sustainable building here in Chester County", said Martin. We offer different levels of green construction from Chester Springs to Kennett Square." " We were convinced that the change in the housing market required a change from builders and that some consumers would be intrigued by the opportunity to build green. Our goal is to lead the change in how communities are developed so that we have sustainable resources available for future generations," said Marks. "And the best part is, you’ll love the home and the savings".

Both builders are Energy Star partners (http://www.energystar.gov/). ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices.

There are green home options for all home buyers. Current options in Chester County range from $299,000 to $2.4 million. According to Matt Fetick, both builders are offering custom home options with the green home building techniques. "I’m proud to represent builders who are proactively becoming a part of responsible homebuilding".  "The response from homebuyers has been tremendous. The number one reason we hear from buyers about buying green is healthier living. They want to improve indoor air quality to reduce asthma and other respiratory illnesses. The second is the financial aspect of reduced monthly costs."

A free Green Home Seminar is being offered on Thursday March 27 at the Chester County Chamber of Commerce, 1600 Paoli Pike in Malvern from 7:00pm-8:30. Guests are invited to come and hear about green homes and have their questions answered. Space is limited. To RSVP call 610.765.1419 or email: .
